Clear Creek Rafting: Denver's Closest Whitewater

Clear Creek is the closest commercial whitewater to Denver — less than an hour west on I-70, running through the canyon between Idaho Springs and Golden. It packs Class II family floats through Class IV-V expert runs into roughly 20 miles of river, all within day-trip reach of the metro. Whitewatr lists 26 outfitters running Clear Creek trips, with prices starting around $85 on average. Prices shown are representative — always confirm current pricing directly with the outfitter.

Why Clear Creek

If you live anywhere along the Front Range — Denver, Boulder, Colorado Springs, Fort Collins — Clear Creek is the rafting trip you can actually do in a single afternoon. The canyon runs parallel to I-70, so outfitter meeting points are 40-60 minutes from downtown Denver, and most trips are half-day (2-3 hours on water). That makes it the default choice for bachelor/bachelorette parties from Denver, corporate outings, one-day visitors on Colorado ski trips, and anyone who wants whitewater without a 2-hour drive to Buena Vista.

The tradeoff is that Clear Creek is a narrow, continuous, dam-release-fed river — the rapids come fast and keep coming. It's technical for its size, and the high-water Class IV-V sections (the Narrows, Hellgate) are serious whitewater despite their proximity to the city.

Section-by-Section Breakdown

Lower Clear Creek / Kermit's Run (Class II-III)

Near Idaho Springs — 3-4 miles

The beginner-friendly section and the most popular run on Clear Creek. Class II waves with a few Class III drops make it a legitimate intro to whitewater for families and first-timers. Most outfitters run this as a 2-3 hour half-day. At peak flows in June it can stretch to Class III+, so ask about water levels when booking.

Class: II-III (up to III+ at high water)

Typical age minimum: 8

Best for: First-timers, families, quick Denver day trips

Upper Clear Creek (Class IV)

Above Idaho Springs — 3-5 miles

Continuous Class IV whitewater through the upper canyon. Tight technical rapids with no flat water to recover — you paddle hard from start to finish. Requires prior rafting experience, and age minimums jump to 14 or 16 at most outfitters. This is where the trip turns from "fun family activity" into serious whitewater.

Class: IV

Typical age minimum: 14-16

Best for: Experienced rafters wanting a short-drive Class IV fix

The Narrows / Hellgate (Class IV-V)

Clear Creek Canyon — 2-3 miles

The most intense commercially run water on Clear Creek, and some of the hardest Class IV-V whitewater on any Front Range day trip. Narrow slot rapids, abrupt drops, and no swimming room. Only runs during higher flows, typically late May through early July. Most outfitters gate this with a mandatory prior-experience requirement and older age minimums.

Class: IV-V

Typical age minimum: 16-18

Best for: Expert rafters, adrenaline seekers

Intermediate Clear Creek / The Full Run (Class III-IV)

Upper Canyon through Idaho Springs — 6-10 miles

A longer full-day or extended half-day that combines Class III and Class IV water. A good step up for rafters who've done Browns Canyon and want something more technical but aren't ready for the Narrows. Outfitters pair this with Class III sections upstream or downstream depending on water.

Class: III-IV

Typical age minimum: 12-14

Best for: Repeat rafters wanting a step up from Class III

Season & Best Time to Go

Season: Mid-May through mid-August. The shortest major-rafting season in Colorado because the river is fed primarily by snowmelt with dam-controlled augmentation.

Peak water: Late May through June. This is when the Narrows and Upper Clear Creek are at their most intense (and only fully runnable).

Peak demand: Weekends from Memorial Day through mid-July, especially Saturdays. Book 1-2 weeks out for Denver-area weekends.

Best for beginners: Mid-July through August when flows moderate. Class II-III lower runs stay fun all summer; Class IV sections may close late season.

Best deals: Weekday mornings and the last two weeks of August.

Getting There from Denver

Most Clear Creek outfitters stage trips out of Idaho Springs, which sits 35 miles west of downtown Denver on I-70 (Exit 240). Drive time is 40-60 minutes in normal traffic, longer on Sunday afternoons when I-70 returns from the mountains. Several outfitters have staging areas at Kermit's Roadhouse, in downtown Idaho Springs, or at pull-offs in the canyon itself.

For Boulder, take US-6 or Highway 93 to I-70 West (roughly 1 hour). From Colorado Springs or Fort Collins plan 1.5-2 hours. All outfitters on Clear Creek must hold a Clear Creek County Commercial River Outfitter License — ask about it when booking if you want to verify they're operating legally.
