Juneau Outburst Flood Crests at 14.7 Feet as Tour Operators Kept Away
Suicide Basin on the Mendenhall Glacier began releasing on Aug. 11, and the National Weather Service said the Mendenhall River crested at 14.7 feet on Thursday, Aug. 13. During the flood, Juneau's Unified Command asked all tour operators to avoid possible flood zones, warning that tourism to the Mendenhall River could pose a major risk to life safety, and access to the west side of Mendenhall Lake was closed. WBUR reported there was not much damage this year, crediting in part a new system of flood walls.
Denali's Pretty Rocks Bridge Done, Bus Access West Returns in 2027
The National Park Service announced in early September that the Pretty Rocks Bridge on the Denali Park Road is complete, and as of Aug. 27 hikers and cyclists can travel west of East Fork at mile 43 and cross it. Buses will go no farther than East Fork for the rest of the 2026 season, with full bus service expected to resume in 2027. KUAC reported the project cost about $230 million, and Healy Mayor Chris Noel said he is hearing from tourism workers that bookings spiked after the announcement. Any added visitor traffic to the Denali area from the reopening would arrive with the 2027 season, not this one.
