Glen Canyon Dam Heads Into a Low-Elevation Operating Year
The Department of the Interior issued a Record of Decision on Aug. 21 adopting new operating guidelines for Lake Powell and Lake Mead for 2027 and 2028. Reclamation's Glen Canyon Dam operations page, updated Sept. 15, says Lake Powell's water year 2027 operations will be guided by the Low Elevation Infrastructure Protection Range, with an expected release of 6.00 to 7.00 million acre-feet, and put the lake at 3,517.87 feet at the end of August, about 183 feet from full pool.
No Cool-Water or High-Flow Releases at Glen Canyon Dam This Year
KUNC, publishing Circle of Blue reporting on Sept. 20, said cool mix releases at Glen Canyon Dam will not happen in 2026, and Reclamation said the decision was based on "significant hydropower generation concerns under already strained system conditions." Reclamation has not done a high-flow release since 2023, and experts told the outlet one is highly unlikely this fall. High flows carry sediment through Grand Canyon to rebuild the beaches boaters camp on during river trips, and the report said a typical sand bar is smaller now than in 2016.
