Market Insights
California Reservoirs Near Average While Most Streams Run Below Normal
The California Department of Water Resources said in its hydrology update published Sept. 15 that statewide reservoir storage at the end of August was about 104% of average. Streamflow told a different story: about 73% of streamflow locations were flowing below normal for the water year to Sept. 14, and DWR said flow for major rivers remained near baseflow levels. Statewide precipitation through August was about 22.2 inches, or 96% of average. The split means late-season rafting in California depends largely on scheduled dam releases rather than natural runoff.
South Fork American Hosts 2026 U.S. Rafting National Championship
The United States Rafting Association held its National Whitewater Rafting Championship Aug. 13-15 on the South Fork of the American River at Chili Bar, the Mountain Democrat reported on Aug. 26. Twenty-nine teams competed in sprint, slalom and head-to-head racing on a Class II course, running 9 a.m. to noon each day during regular water release times. The event served as a selection competition for Team USA, and first- and second-place finishers in each event will compete in the 2027 World Whitewater Rafting Championship, venue to be determined.
