Idaho Faces Near-Historic Drought; Boise and Payette Basins Fare Better
The Idaho Statesman reported on Sept. 26 that a meteorologist described the state's conditions as "close to some of the worst drought that we've ever seen in the state," with runoff from the mountains having run out in April. Reservoirs in the Upper Snake River Basin were filled to only 9% capacity, while the Boise River Basin's reservoirs were at about 90% of their usual level for the season. The paper reported that other than the Boise and Payette river basins, the whole state faced water shortages this year. A Capital Press summary of the U.S. Drought Monitor published Sept. 15 put some level of drought over roughly 73% of Idaho.
