Market Insights
Drought Covers All of Maine as Groundwater Stays Near Record Lows
Maine's Drought Task Force said on Sept. 3, 2026 that groundwater across much of the state never recovered from fall 2025's record lows, and that drought has been increasing after another summer of below normal rainfall. By Sept. 24, WGME reported that 100 percent of the state was in drought, with around 25 percent in at least severe drought, up from 8 percent in drought on June 23.
McKay Station Outage Shifts Penobscot Flows and Put-In Parking to Oct. 10
Brookfield Renewable announced on Sept. 18, 2026 a scheduled outage at McKay Station on the West Branch Penobscot beginning Sept. 20 and expected to last through approximately Oct. 10. During the outage, nearly all river flow will be provided via deep gates at Ripogenus Dam and routed through the upper gorge. The lower parking lot next to McKay Station is unavailable, and raft drop-offs are directed to the upper parking lot, which changes the late-season put-in routine for Penobscot trips.
