Drought Worsens in Parts of Western North Carolina Mountains
The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality reported on Sept. 17 that more than two-thirds of North Carolina counties remain in some stage of drought, and more than half of the state's streamflows were in the below-normal or much below-normal range. The agency said drought conditions worsened in parts of Cherokee, Haywood and Swain counties in western North Carolina.
I-40 Pigeon River Gorge Rebuild Rises to $2.8 Billion, Slips to 2029
NCDOT said on Sept. 2 that rebuilding the Helene-damaged stretch of I-40 through the Pigeon River Gorge will cost approximately $2.8 billion, up from an approximately $2 billion estimate earlier this year, with four lanes restored by late 2029. Traffic has been reduced to one lane in each direction since the road reopened in March 2025, and NCDOT is aiming to have two eastbound lanes and one westbound lane open by late 2028. Drivers reaching Pigeon River trips through the gorge will keep sharing a reduced highway for several more seasons.
Smoky Mountains Region Led 2025 Mountain Tourism Growth After Helene
N.C. Commerce data published Aug. 13 put 2025 statewide visitor spending at a record $37.2 billion, up 1.3%. The Smoky Mountains & Cherokee region, which sustained the least Helene damage, saw the largest boost at 4.3%, driven by Cherokee (+14%) and Macon (+11%) counties, while the Asheville & the Foothills region declined 0.7% and Buncombe dropped 2.1%. The figures cover all travel spending, not rafting alone.
