Lake Powell Hits Record Lows as Flaming Gorge Releases Continue
KSL reported Sept. 7 that Lake Powell and Lake Mead both reached record-low elevations in August, after a winter the Bureau of Reclamation says produced the lowest observed snowpack on record. Reclamation's August 24-Month Study, dated Aug. 21, put Lake Powell at 3,519.36 feet on Aug. 20 and projected it to decline below 3,510 feet during water year 2027. Between 660,000 and 1 million acre-feet of extra water is being sent from Flaming Gorge Reservoir to Lake Powell through April 2027, and Reclamation advises recreationists on the Green River below Flaming Gorge Dam to monitor changing conditions and use extreme caution.
Park Service Approves Low-Water Launch Ramps at Hite and Bullfrog
Glen Canyon National Recreation Area signed a Finding of No Significant Impact on Sept. 9 for low-water launch ramps in its Bullfrog and Hite districts, a project the Park Service says will maintain safe and reliable access to Lake Powell and the Colorado River during ongoing low water conditions. At Hite, the project will establish a primitive fixed launch and retrieval ramp, improve the access road and expand parking. The Hite work could matter for river parties that take out in that district as the reservoir keeps dropping.
